Officially released on May 21st, 2021, The Paper Sea has put forward his impeccably captivating debut record, Shadow Falls. Please don’t miss out, read along for our full featured review, in addition to a background on the artist as well.

Jared Matt Greenberg, who is much better known as The Paper Sea, has presented his debut album Shadow Falls which immediately took us by hold. For the fans of artists such as Harold Budd, George Winston, or Eluvium, this is certainly going to be up your alley of listening. Get ready for a masterful piece of uplifting ambient music.

Put together by Jared Matt Greenberg and learning that this was a solo project just makes the finished product even more impressive. With the help of mastering by Damien Rasmussen (Tom Waits, Cibo Matto), our first impressions through our completed first listen were just how compelling and hopeful the music made us feel. It’s not too often a fully instrumental piece crosses our paths, but when it does, it takes a lot for us to stay hooked from start to finish. With that being said though, from the opening moments on “Sentient Stars”, it was an immediate rush of dopamine.

You can feel the influences and inspirations such as Brian Eno, Talk Talk, and Radiohead throughout the entirety of the hour listen as each song features little glimmers and moments that allude to the greats. However, there’s still so much originality and forethought that went into this, it feels like he only used them as a base to craft the fresh sound you’ll hear today.

Normally on an hour listen like this, you’d imagine there would be lulls or dull points, but thankfully there’s enough happening atmospherically that the thought doesn’t even cross your mind. As the music industry leans toward single to single releases, it’s one of the most refreshing feelings to sit with a cohesive piece of music that’s meant to be listened to front to back. It should probably come as no surprise, but Shadow Falls is a record that we are overwhelmingly recommending you put into your listening lineup as soon as you can. It’s going to deliver, but probably even moreso on repeated listens.
