Following up his 2017 EP, Decade + Days, D. Marin Perez has paid homage to the city that he’s worked in as a community organizer and minister for the last 4 years, Los Angeles. Before we get into the song though, we’d love to familiarize ourselves with the artist. Born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, influenced by a “steady diet of The Beatles and Mormon hymns”, the artist has had the artist’s touch from a young age. He found an escape within songwriting in his young adulthood and thus began the path of creating music.

In his current days though, he mainly pulls musical inspiration from those in the rock and R&B space, such as Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, John Mayer, and plenty of more legendary artists. Adding a signature sound of his own on what he’s released so far, he’s certainly making a name for himself, in terms of boosting creativity as a solo musician.

As Los Angeles natives ourselves, it’s always a trip to listen closely to the lyricism presented about a city that you hold near and dear to your art. The artist filled us in and let us know that “Los Angeles” is a “snarky love letter to the city I've served as a community organizer and minister for 4 years. It's commentary on the dramatic and thoroughgoing inequality that exists between Skid Row and Beverly Hills, and it's a plea for LA to take a look inside and listen to our better angels”

As much as this song is instrumentally interesting, we’d like to think that the sole focus was to be focused directly on the lyrics and the real story that’s being told. Translating his feelings into an indie folk tune is what he’s succeeded at best here, but really the gold has struck within the context. We can only assume that there were ups and downs during his stint in the city, but it must feel great to pen to paper about the experience.

We absolutely are recommending the song though, and we think that you should definitely check it out too. Realistically though, it’s got us incredibly excited for his album that’s coming out, titled Change Is. While we don’t have an exact release date just yet, we’ll for sure be keeping a close eye. “Los Angeles” has convinced us that D. Marin Perez is the real deal, and we’re here to stay.

Even more impressive is that the artist wrote it, sung, and plays all the instruments as well (guitar and keys). What are you waiting for? Get listening!
