London based artist, Layal, has officially entered the music scene with the release of her two fantastic new singles, “The Sun & The Moon” and “Roots of Desire”. Read along with us as we breakdown the tracks, as well as give some background on the upcoming artist.

Originally from Egypt, Layal had always been passionate about singing and music as well. It wasn't until 2018, when she moved to London, that she started to actively participate in the music scene by going to different Open Mic nights & meeting artists & musicians. Once she established herself in London, she started working with music producer Chris Hall, who then gave her the chance to write and record her own music.

While we usually only review individual songs, EP’s or full length albums, this was a completely different scenario for us as both singles Layal has released equally blew us in quality. “The Sun & The Moon” was originally released in February 2020, and as you will hear, it incorporates both Arabic & English lyrics & instruments. Layal wanted to bring more attention to Egyptian instrumentals because she noticed how much it added to the song. We completely agree! Hearing unidentifiable instruments gave this track an immense amount of uniqueness that no other artist is currently incorporating into their sounds. Being from Egypt has so obviously given this artist the upper hand on the vast knowledge of instruments that pop music has yet to include.

According to Layal, “For the moment, I can't pinpoint which genre of music I make. I'm experimenting with some of my favourite genres of music like Reggae or Blues or alternative music for example, until I find my own sound.”. In our opinion, an artist doesn’t necessarily need to have a specific sound that defines them. Particularly the vocals on both tracks are what really stood out to us the most. Layal’s voice is smooth and serene, all the while fitting into the vibe and atmosphere into the tracks wonderfully. “Roots of Desire”, which is a Liquid Drum & Bass track, is much different than the first single, which had more of a Reggae sound, however it holds the same energy and has many metaphors in the lyrics.

If we haven’t made it clear enough, there’s definitely something special here that Layal has created for the world. We highly encourage and recommend you to stop what you’re doing and get listening to these unique pieces of music. Luckily for those who like them, there’s a third single on the way that Layal should hopefully be releasing soon in the future. Additionally, there’s rumors of a possible music video for “Roots of Desire” as well.
