A meaningful and heartfelt song from start to finish, Yana has just delivered another piece of pure beauty in the form of “Calm Before The Storm”. Keep reading for a closer look into the track, as well as a background on this artist.

Described as being one of the “strongest Irish feels of all tracks I have released to date”, Yana’s “Calm Before The Storm” certainly has those elements to it, but she’s also managed to create something incredibly diverse as well. Written as a reaction to the sudden passing of coveted singer and fiddle player Jitka Suranska, there’s definitely a melancholy undertone that it possesses yet an underlying beauty in it all as well due to the instrumentation. It’s certainly up for debate, however we’ve thoroughly enjoyed our repeated listens of this and feel that everyone out there is going to feel the same.

Considering that “Calm Before The Storm” is relatively stripped back and shifts your focus to the lyricism and songwriting, ultimately it’s trying to spread an optimistic message. We’re all so busy either living in the past or the future and this urges us all to enjoy our days while we can and live in the present times instead of being in another state. Yana’s vocals so eloquently paint that picture and project the feeling, but you can’t help but also sympathize with someone who’s just experienced a tragic loss. When it comes to these icons who we idolize, even if we haven’t met them or had a relationship with them, the community still grieves nonetheless due to the major impact of them being gone.

Now while Yana’s voice provides a much needed constant throughout “Calm Before The Storm”, her choice in string instrumentation to add that layered depth was absolutely the right and necessary stylistic call. It’s so easy nowadays to have juxtaposing and conflicting messages within music, but we’re thrilled in her decision to not go over the top with the production and rather keep this as more of a minimalistic and downtempo listen from beginning to end. If anything, it’s invited us to do a deep dive on the rest of her music, which we will be in the near future.
