Jim Duff crafts an imagery-filled and country inspired EP, "He Went West"

Out on February 4th, 2021, Jim Duff is back and better than ever with a beautiful new EP, titled He Went West. Read along with us as we share our complete thoughts on the record, as well as a refresher on the artist.

Combining country ballads and a southern style of rock, we can’t help but be impressed by Jim Duff’s latest output He Went West. Building off of his past releases, he’s certainly upped his game in terms of inventive instrumentation, vocal delivery, and imagery-filled lyricism. Without a doubt, this is a record and an artist we highly recommend getting into.

In case you forgot, it wasn’t too long ago that we covered the artist’s single, “Solid As A Rock”. While that was our first foray into his music and signature brand of music, we’ve been nothing but hooked since then. We had hoped for an EP just like this to come, and thankfully, it has arrived and surpassed our every expectation.

Coming in at a total of 5 total tracks, spanning 18 wonderful minutes, there’s an alarming amount of pros that we managed to note on our first impressions. What Jim has done here is take the country sound and really go full force in that direction, but in a super interesting way. The instrumentation here is 100% southern country in its roots and sound, but his vocal structure and cadence isn’t as “stereotypical” as you’d assume. Sure, there’s definitely some country influence present, but his vocals are versatile to the point where you could throw him in any genre and he’d excel.

In particular though, one of the songs that stood out the most was the single “Lift You Up”. Says the artist himself, he wrote it specifically for all of the healthcare professionals that have worked so hard to keep him alive over the years. While we aren’t aware of the specifics, we can confidently say that the lyrics speak for themselves. Our real hope here is that those who have cared for him over the years have listened and enjoyed the art that he’s created for them.

With all being said though, the output on He Went West was nothing short of incredible. As the weather begins to get hotter over where we’re located, this is definitely the type of music we’ll have blasting in the hot summer months. Do yourselves a favor and get into this record whenever you can, you won’t regret it!
