Tame Impala's Cameron Avery breaks down EP "Scrooge", talks new music, & more

Interview by Austin Sher

Surprising the fans at the end of the year, Cameron Avery has just released a brand new EP, titled Scrooge. With 100% of the proceeds going to The Bowery Mission in New York, we were thrilled to get the inside scoop in our full length video interview with the incredibly talented multi-instrumentalist. You can watch our full talk by clicking the link below.

Most of you might know Cameron Avery from his ongoing stint as the touring bassist for Tame Impala, but he is so much more than that. Following up his 2017 LP release, Ripe Dreams Pipe Dreams, this Christmas-themed EP Scrooge may just be one of his best works yet. In addition to it benefitting The Bowery Mission, it provides four originals and two classic holiday covers.

While we’d much prefer for the reader to watch our full video interview, we’ll let you in on a few lively topics we spoke about with the artist himself. For those who are well versed in the Australian Music Scene, Cameron Avery has been quietly creating masterpieces for almost the past 10 years. We spoke to the artist about his early days in The Growl, the “lost” albums between him and Pond’s Nick Allbrook, what he’s been up to during quarantine, and so much more. We did bring up the infamous superduo, AAA Aardvark Getdown Services, but you’ll have to watch to find out more.

As for the actual EP, Scrooge, Cam has done truly something special here. In a time where the holiday season is tougher than ever for most folks, we are highly recommending that if you’re going to make a purchase, to purchase it through Bandcamp (on a Friday) in order for all of the proceeds to benefit The Bowery Mission in New York. Bandcamp has been nice enough to allow for all fees to be waived in order to benefit the artist/charities alike. So while all the music is amazing on the record, the mission and message behind it is even more important.

While Scrooge was more of an afterthought for Cam, he did also release a couple amazing singles recently. One being a collaborative single with Alexandra Savior called “We’re Just Making It Worse” that had been in the works for years and finally saw the light of day. The other titled “One More Day” is a straightforward Cam track, that according to our interview, may be indicative of a future sound for the artist, especially on a new album of work (hopefully coming soon).

That’s all we’re going to say for now. We truly hope you enjoy the interview, but more importantly, make sure to check out all of Cameron Avery’s work, Bandcamp page, social pages, and more using the links below.
