Beka Barz flips heartbreak into playful power on “Wannabe”

Beka Barz has turned personal life into art, and with her new single “Wannabe,” she proves that revenge can sound as sweet as it is sharp. Born from the fallout of a first boyfriend’s betrayal, this track takes a memory and flips it into a tongue-in-cheek anthem. Where heartbreak once lived, there’s now wit and some serious groove.

Inspired by the Spice Girls’ iconic ‘90s hit of the same name, Barz injects her version with sly lyrical nods while making it unmistakably her own. The playful echo of the line “if you wanna be my lover” feels less like nostalgia and more like an artist borrowing from the past to reshape the present. It’s a knowing wink to pop culture, but one that never leans on gimmickry.

Musically, the track thrives on its lush production. Under her pseudonym B3K, Barz navigated the production herself, layering tight hip-hop rhythms with fat bass lines that practically vibrate while you listen. The sound is bold but clean, giving her words plenty of space to cut through. There’s a richness to the sonic palette too with these subtle textures, unexpected flourishes, and a low-end warmth that makes the track feel polished without the grit vanishing.

The music video (attached below) only adds to the greatness of the song. Directed and edited by Barz herself and filmed by her wife, Aimee Buffong under their Four Reel production company, it’s another example of the artist’s all-in creative vision. Everything about the package feels self-assured and intentional, the work of someone who knows her voice and isn’t afraid to put it at the center.
