Bird Dreams debut two incredible new singles, "Movin' On" and "Metro Dream"

Review by Austin Sher

Berlin based indie pop band, Bird Dreams, have shared their two brand new singles, “Metro Dream” and “Movin’ On”. Read along with us as we provide our thoughts on what we thought of the two tracks, as well as some background on the up and coming band.

Based out of Berlin, Germany, Bird Dreams have seriously impressed us with their first two offerings. Before we get into our review of the songs, we’d love to provide you with a quick bio on the band. The band was officially born in 2017 as a duo, consisting of Laura Bondí and Danil Zverkhanovsky, respectively the lead singer and the main guitarist, who brought the music and lyrics to the table. The musicians then took their time refining the vision and arrangements until pianist and keyboard player Joschka Oßke and drummer Hiromu Seifert completed the lineup in 2019. The band was then ready to start recording their music.

One thing you’ll notice after listening to both singles is that the band performs with a somewhat unorthodox rhythm section, which doesn't include a bassist. Instead the bass part is carried out partly by the guitar using an octaver effect and partly by a synth bass. This was a choice enabled by the guitarist's playing style and it's a challenge forcing the band to find original arrangement solutions. What a fantastic choice it was, because it’s honestly hard to tell. Danil so flawlessly plays multiple instruments within his guitar that you’d think there were two people doing the single job of one.

Both of these singles were released in July 2020, and to be perfectly honest, are some of the most unique and thought provoking songs we heard throughout the month. As a personal lover of all things indie and experimental, this was an ideal song for myself. It kept me interested, it kept me guessing what was going to happen next, and I especially fell in love with the vocal performance almost immediately. While the song’s instrumentation is clearly impressive, the vocals are what really tied it together the most.

I do need to give a shout out to the keyboardist and drummer as well, because their work should never go unnoticed. If you listen closely and try to pick out the instruments in isolation, both the drumming and piano playing complements the songs in the best way possible.

Now the hardest part here is that I truly loved both songs and I don’t think I could pick just one as to which was my favorite, we’ll leave that up to you, the listener. Now while the band has technically been a “band” since 2017, we’re thrilled that they finally released such fantastic songs as their debuts. We really hope that one day, when they’re touring America, we’ll get to witness their greatness live. We’ll also definitely be keeping a close eye on them, because how could a band that sounds this good so early in their career not succeed? With that being said, listen to this band! You will not regret it, we promise.
