Ahead of debut record, Blackout Orchestra shares single and video for "Siren Song"

Review by Austin Sher

Seeing its official release on January 8th, 2021, ahead of a new album, Blackout Orchestra is back with a brand new single and music video, titled “Siren Song”. Not to spoil, but we’re loving it! Do yourselves a favor and read along for our review of the track, in addition to a background on the artist as well.

Blackout Orchestra is the solo project of Benjamin VanBuskirk, in which he’s crafting relatable yet catchy music that should be played for the masses. Seeing as his debut LP, I Will Want You When We Are Ghosts  is set for release on March 5th, 2021, let’s let the hype begin right now as we dig into his newest single and music video for “Siren Song”. Blending elements of lofi, alternative, and more, this one is an instant winner.

On “Siren Song”, VanBuskirk gave us a short background on the track where he tells us, “Really, this one's about being in a relationship where the other person has already emotionally checked out, but you're still going on as if things were normal.” Having been there ourselves, it’s not a great place to be in. However, taking sadness and confusion and forming it into a memorable song is always a productive way to help one get over it. We don’t want to give too much away, because we’d prefer you to listen and watch the video for the full effect, but this one hits hard.

One of the many elements that we particularly loved about this single was the first minute or so and just how wonderfully the artist managed to blend the instruments. A piano, guitar, drums, and eventually Ben’s stellar vocals all finally meet up and create beauty within a somber feel. While this song is nice to listen to, it gets a whole lot better when you actually take the time to listen, especially within the lyrics. As mentioned above, this is a personal story, so we recommend taking the time to listen to the story being portrayed.

Considering that this is the first teaser track to drop ahead of the album release, we’re fully on board for what’s to come next. An artist who can come to terms openly with what’s going on in their lives and magically turn it into something for all to enjoy is always impressive. So considering that there’s about to be an album of tunes, potentially just like these, we’re very much looking forward to the March 5th release date.

With all this being said though, we hope we’ve made it clear that we’re recommending and encouraging you to take the time out of your busy lives to listen and reflect. Make sure to check out the music video as well, it was really well done! For now, enjoy.
