Brian Hunsaker reaches new heights on "Edge of the World"

On his latest, Edge of the World, Brian Hunsaker delivers his most imposing and immersive statement to date, a melodic metal single that balances sheer weight with undeniable beauty. Serving as the third preview from his forthcoming EP, the track stretches close to six minutes and uses every second with intention, unfolding like a cinematic ascent that rewards patience.

Built on massive, tightly wound riffs, the song establishes its power early, but what makes it resonate is how carefully that force is shaped as the song goes on. The guitars hit hard yet remain articulate, carving out space for soaring harmonies and expansive melodies that hit you right in the soul. Mixed by Matt Dougherty, whose résumé includes work with Megadeth, the production gives the track a colossal, modern punch.

Hunsaker’s vocals are 100% the defining force here on top of everything else you’re about to hear. Trained by Susan Carr, the legendary coach behind Layne Staley’s vocal development, he brings a rare balance of grit and control. His voice moves effortlessly between strength and vulnerability, really playing with all the emotions of the song. Undoubtedly, there’s a euphoric quality to his sound, especially as the song rises into its many emotional peaks, hitting highs that’ll send chills down your spine. Even at its heaviest, the track remains accessible, especially for those who might initially be scared off of “metal”.

Instrumentally, Edge of the World showcases his literal decades of experience as both a guitarist and composer. The solos are fiery, but sometimes more about storytelling than technical flexing, while the quieter instrumental moments offer brief, beautiful breaths between surges of intensity. As a former member of the Dio tribute band Stand Up & Shout, he’s long been praised for his instincts and that’s fully translated into the original work. Here, those strengths are sharpened and channeled into a track that holds all the passion in the world.

It’s heavy without being oppressive and technical without every being overly showy. Brian Hunsaker has shown us that melodic metal can still feel expansive and thrilling when guided by strong songwriting and fearless vision. Hit after hit he continues to impress, so please, take a moment out of your day and crank this one up!
