Catlea turns heartbreak into triumph on the luminous "Someone's Got To" - Interview
There's infinite power in a song that takes something as vulnerable as self-doubt and transforms it into something resolute. Catlea has accomplished exactly that on their newest single, "Someone's Got To." Released worldwide on July 17th, this track is a beautifully crafted anthem of self-discovery, and it makes a genuinely strong case for why Catlea's music continues to resonate so deeply. Even better, we got to interview the artist and learn a ton about what makes this song great.
It’s built around intimate acoustic guitar and cinematic strings striking a really lovely balance between poppy accessibility and real emotion. The instrumentation pops in a big way throughout, giving the track a lush feel that never overshadows the vulnerability at its core. That refrain, the simple but devastating idea of loving yourself when someone else won't, lands instantly.
Perhaps the star of the entire show are Catlea's vocals because they’re exceptional throughout, transcendent in the way they carry strength. We thought you could really feel storytelling in the delivery. It’s personal and specific in a way that still manages to feel universal. That's always been part of their gift, taking those deeply lived experiences and turning them into something poetic through lyricism that basically plays out like a music video in your head.
Like any good song, that chorus is genuinely catchy too! The production throughout is excellent, polished enough to give the song that poppiness but there’s still an undercurrent of seriousness beneath it all. Additionally, if you’re unfamiliar with them, they’re originally from Cincinnati but now based in London.
As the lead single from their upcoming five song EP "Aftermath," the highly anticipated follow up to their acclaimed concept album "Language Barrier," this track sets an exciting tone for what's ahead. To say we’re excited for it is still somehow an understatement! We did get a bit of a sneak peak on the sound, which is supposedly going to be more of a “maximalist” record. What that’s going to entail, it barely matters, because we’re excited for anything new at this point.
Of course we recently had the chance to sit down with Catlea to talk through the making of this song (linked above!), and it was a wonderful conversation. We touched on the meaning behind the track, the production choices that shaped its sound, the writing process, and what listeners can expect from the rest of the EP.
