Chloé French serves a velvety groove on “Chocolat”

On Chocolat, the latest single from her forthcoming EP The NY Tapes, Chloé French continues to cement herself as one of the most exciting young voices out there. She’s been effortlessly blending European elegance with New York’s buzzing edge and at only 24, she’s already shaping a signature sound. To say it’s sleek, magnetic, or dripping with style would be a severe understatment and Chocolat might be her tastiest single yet!

Written and produced with Alex Poeppel at Kensaltown East Studios, the track is a French disco fever dream pulsing with a late-night energy. Sung entirely in French, it radiates a mood you don’t need translation to feel, but a kind of vibe that slips straight into you. Chloé’s voice glides through the production with ease, warm and textured one moment, cool and weightless the next. Her vocal delivery is sprinkled with some subtle effects and alterations that add a little shimmer, but let us be clear, the girl’s got range.

The inspiration comes from an unlikely place too, the chocolate cramique from Le Merveilleux de Fred. Though we’ve never tried it, it’s now a life goal. She takes that nostalgia into a metaphor for a love you know you shouldn’t indulge in, but do anyway. Chocolat captures that intoxicating push and pull. It’s a confessional wrapped in groovy basslines and downtempo synths, with a touch of retro charm too. Compared to the last song we reviewed from her, “Messy (but French)”, the originality is quickly ramping up.

Production wise, the song is a total triumph. The synth bass hits with a rich thickness, carrying the song’s heartbeat as everything else moves around it. It’s polished, but there’s still real heat in its rhythm. Honestly it’s fast enough to move to, chilled-out enough to sink into, but never for one second are you going to think this isn’t an absolute groove.

It’s not just a stylish electronic single, it’s a statement. Chloé’s European roots, her NYC fire, her cinematic instincts, and her electro disco sensibilities all fuse into a sound that feels unmistakably hers. As we inch closer to the EP drop, it’s songs like this that have us so undeniably pumped for more.
