Con Piliouras crafts a timeless Instrumental gem on "Almost Yesterday"
Music like this doesn’t need a single word to say everything it needs to say, and "Almost Yesterday" proves that beautifully. Adelaide based composer Con Piliouras has put together a stunning, all instrumental piece here, and it's the kind of composition that immediately marks him as a serious talent worth paying attention to. What's immediately so impressive about this piece is how naturally it bridges classical tradition with something a lot more modern and cinematic. Piliouras clearly has a deep respect for classical structure and instrumentation, and you can hear that in every choice he makes. Though he never lets the piece feel stuck in the past. He brings this sort of rich and emotional language that feels thoroughly contemporary, giving the whole thing an almost film score quality, but the intimacy is still very much there.
The instrumentation here is genuinely gorgeous! Guitar, piano, oboe, flute, a string quintet, and percussion all weave together throughout the piece. and he generously shares the spotlight. Every single instrument gets its own moment to shine rather than getting buried in the arrangement and that balance gives the piece a real sense of conversation, like each part is responding to the one before it.
Clocking in at just a tad under four minutes, "Almost Yesterday" never overstays its welcome, but it also never feels rushed. It moves with patience, letting each section breathe and build naturally before shifting into the next. There's a real emotional arc running through the piece, and even without lyrics to guide you, you can feel it pulling you along. To be honest, that’s kind of our favorite part of instrumental music is being able to apply your meaning or emotions into everything.
