Dirtycakes unleash their heavy new single, "Photograph"

Review by Austin Sher

Released on July 17th, 2020, Dirtycakes are back with a heavy new single, titled “Photograph”. Read along with us as we give a bit of insight into the band, but mainly review the track that we’re absolutely loving!

Before we get into just how much we enjoyed this song, let’s familiarize ourselves a bit with the band. Los Angeles based Dirtycakes are made up of Charley Tichenor (Unit Shifters, Turbulent Hearts) on vocals and guitar, Rick Torres (Supreme Beings Of Leisure, English Beat) on bass and background vocals, and Becky Wreck (Lunachicks, La Muerte) on  drums and percussion. These three talented musicians make up Dirtycakes who we’re so incredibly thrilled came into our lives with this new single.

The band describes themselves as high desert hard rock combined with New York City and Los Angeles Punk Rock. Focusing on passionate high energy vocal performances from Charley T, fuzz-ridden and psychedelic guitars, backed by bombastic drums from Becky Wreck & Incendiary Baselines from Rick Torres. Built on the pillars of Honesty, Community and Authenticity, Dirtycakes lets you know exactly where you stand. They provide identity and belonging to the many who demand more from their rock and roll than to be just wallpaper. For those on the verge of revolution, for those who are finished with the boring, with the safe, with the lack of vigor, and those who are fed up with the old guard.

Well needless to say, and we’ll let you be the judges for yourself, this single straight up rocks. From the opening heavy guitar riff and soon as the vocals entered, we were sold. What you’ll find on “Photograph” is a heavenly mix of shredding guitar, booming drums, and a vocal performance that shines incredibly bright. The song is filled with raw energy that is channeled not only into the lyrics, but the overall mood and atmosphere that the song gives off.

These days, at least in our opinion, so much of this particular genre sounds very “same-y”, in the sense that it’s becoming more and more difficult to differentiate one band from another. Something about “Photograph” though sounded different and evoked a sense of creativity that’s hard to get out of songs in this day and age. Overall though, we’re thrilled Dirtycakes came our way and you’ve definitely got a bunch of new fans over here at We Write About Music. Keep rocking!
