Ego Jones release their psychedelic thriller debut LP, "Fluoressence"

Review by Austin Sher

Psych pop lovers rejoice! Ego Jones’ debut album, Fluorescence, has officially debuted as of August 28th, 2020. Read along with us as we deep dive into our thoughts on the record, in addition to some background on the project as well.

Ego Jones was formed in 2018 by Jude Holland (Drums, Keyboards, Lyrics and Bkg Vox) and Gabriel Garcia (Guitar, Bass, Vox) while attending Booker T. Washington Arts High School in Dallas, TX. Their sound is a trippy blend of modern indie rock and pop, inspired by bands such as Tame Impala and Grizzly Bear, classic psychedelic sounds of bands like Pink Floyd, and jazz chords and rhythms. They released two singles in the spring of 2020 and their full length album is officially out as of today.

Now that we’ve familiarized ourselves a bit, it’s time to get to the music. As lovers of everything psychedelic, our bar is always a little higher than usual, especially compared to other genres. With that being said, this album absolutely blew our expectations out of the water. It checked all the boxes for us such as pure psychedelia, synths, roaring basslines, trance-like vocals, and so much more.

Coming in at a track length of 7 spanning 32 minutes, it’s a perfect bite size album that certainly doesn’t overstay its welcome in the slightest. There’s so much atmospherically and instrumentally going on at all times that it continuously piqued our interests in what was going to come next. We obviously had our favorite tracks on the record as well which included the album opener “If and When”, “Notre Dame”, and the closer, “Not Until”. Although the entire thing is fantastic, there’s always those songs that stand out in the best ways.

Considering that this is only the band’s first official album release, it’s easy for us to say we’re very much looking forward to what’s going to come next. An evolution in sound is something we’d like to hear the band explore sometime in the future, but for now, the lane they chose is a good one. Overall, a seriously commendable job on this record. It would make Kevin Parker proud.
