Eliza Spear gets up close and personal on newest track, “If I Don't Try”

Review by Austin Sher

In a moment where we all need to take time and reflect, Eliza Spear has summed up what we’re all feeling with the release of her newest song, “If I Don’t Try”. The opening chords of the piano driven ballad clue the listener in to take a deep breath and brace themselves for an up close take on our current climate.

One thing we’ve all had on our hands the past few months has been time. Considering the last song Spear released was towards the end of March, we have a good feeling her time has been focused on creating this gem of a song. We did detect a change in overall style though, a very welcoming one at that. The song really only features Eliza and a somber piano. While it’s very much a lyrics-focused track, it took a mature approach that allowed us to focus on the message.

An initial version of the song was set to be released about a month back, but Spear decided to pull it as it wasn’t quite the right time and didn’t fully portray the message. After speaking with Eliza, she let us know that over this past month during the rework of the song, she took the time to speak to a community of Black individuals to really try to understand what they were going through and how possibly she could help. Asking the important questions like, “What can I do?”, “How can I help”, and trying to get down to the core of what we all can do in times like these has never been more important.

After spending the time learning and making light of possible solutions to these problems, the rework of the song was finished, and let us just say we think it’s some of her best work yet. Like mentioned above, it really is just Eliza and a piano on the track. My personal belief here is that the instrumentation on the song takes a backseat to the message within the lyrics that she’s trying to convey and explain. With a song that has a message that’s so relevant, you can’t help but zero in on the lyrics and hear the story from start to finish.

The repeated line “who am I to try” is being repeated for a reason. Who are we all if we sit back and don’t take advantage of our privileges when the privileged are needed most to try and enact change. It shows signs of perseverance in unprecedented times and overall is a song that should be listened to multiple times if needed.

While the message of the song is obviously the forefront, we can’t help but point out that we think this is the best Eliza has sounded. Her vocal range was seriously impressive and the climax towards the end with a joined choir sent shivers down our spine. “If I Don’t Try” is an instant classic and absolutely stands out within Spear’s discography.
