Empty Pinata strips it all back on a hazy new single, “Obvious” - Interview

If your only complaint with a song is that it’s too short and that you desperately wanted more, chances are you’re listening to absolute gold. Alejandro Rodriguez has completely blown us away his newest single, “Obvious,” and it’s the kind of statement that immediately makes you lean closer to the speakers like they’re trying to tell you a secret. This is a headphones-only track, so make sure to enjoy accordingly!

The track opens with a reverbed electric guitar that perfectly sets the tone. It drifts into the song with a solemn, cinematic grace, atmospheric and bold without ever becoming overproduced or performative. There’s sadness here, absolutely, but it’s not dressed in melodrama. Instead, “Obvious” exists in that intersection between emo vulnerability, psychedelic shimmer, and indie-pop restraint. The result is breathtakingly intimate. You can practically hear the air around the microphone.

Rodriguez, who has already built an impressive creative résumé as a photographer, music video director, creative director, and artist developer, clearly understands how mood works. With a ton of eyes on his social media already, he arrives as Empty Pinata with a visual artist’s instinct for framing emotion. Every sound on “Obvious” feels carefully placed inside the negative space. Nothing is crowded. Nothing breaks the spell.

The song hits hard in many ways, but it’s also never trying too hard. No lyrical gymnastics or overcomplicated arrangements. It’s essentially built from a reverbed guitar, raw vocals, and immaculate sound design, yet it somehow feels massive. Rodriguez sings with an unfiltered fragility that gives the track its pulse. His voice hums in all the right places, carrying the honesty of someone too drained to hide behind coolness anymore. In an era where so much indie music feels algorithmically polished into beige wallpaper, “Obvious” dares to sound human.

In our interview with him, we discussed the production process behind “Obvious,” his influences, and what’s still to come from the Empty Pinata project. Hearing him talk about the track only reinforced what the song already suggests, this is an artist with a complete vision. He doesn’t just make music. He builds atmosphere. He constructs emotional worlds and essentially makes you envision his life with lyricism that’s brought to art.

Just as the song fully wraps around you like cigarette smoke curling through projector light, it disappears. But maybe that’s part of its magic. Like the best sad songs, it leaves behind a ghostly afterimage long after the final note fades into silence. You’ve got to listen and follow along of course, but also to check out our interview to really get an idea for how this beauty was made.
