Evan French tells his tales on gripping debut EP, "Back To Square One"

Review by Austin Sher

Shared officially on June 26th, 2020, Evan French has released his debut EP, titled Back To Square One. Read along with us for our full thoughts on his record, in addition to a brief bio on the artist himself.

For those that may be unaware, Evan French is a singer, songwriter and music troubadour hailing from, Tampa Bay Florida, You’ll be able to hear the influences within his tunes, but he has been called a combination of Bob Dylan and Lou Reed, wielding a ringing acoustic guitar and case of harmonicas, As far as musical genres go, he’s mending a set of songs with mixed genres of folk rock, punk, acoustic rock and just a little alternative for good measure and to round it all out.

Specifically on Back To Square One, the critics were correct, it’s extremely reminiscent of both Bob Dylan and Lou Reed, but in the best ways possible. While it’s similar in sound and tone, ultimately Evan brings his own diversity and creativity to the table in terms of crafting uniquity within the genre.

Coming in at a total run time of just under 10 minutes, spanning 4 tracks, each song takes on a life of its own. While there’s plenty of humming acoustic guitars and harmonicas to complement the overall sound, the tracks also feature hard hitting lyricism that we can only imagine stem from the life of Evan French himself.

While the EP is only four tracks, there’s a true sense of diversity in what the artist brings to the table. Considering that this is the first official music release coming from Evan, we can honestly  say that we’ll be looking forward to whatever else he brings to the table in the future. While it may take some time for him to amass more life experiences and stories to tell, we’ll surely be keeping a close eye on all releases in the coming future.

As for picking a favorite from the EP, well that would be an extremely tough call. We will say though that for the readers’ sake, it’s only four songs in length, so might as well listen to it as the artist intended, from front to back. Additionally though if you’re strapped for time, at least let the record opener “Stole My Girl” give you a taste for what’s to come. If that hooks you in, stick around for a good time.

With this all being said though, while this is the first release for the artist, we think it’s a fantastic jumping off point to the future. We enjoy the Bob Dylan-ish sound, mainly because it’s not as emulated as much as it should be for him being such a legend. So take the time, listen to the stories being presented, and form your own opinions.
