Every Other Weekend perfects his storytelling on single, “Memories”
On our first listen, “Memories” felt like a deeply human exhale from an artist who has deliberately found his way back to music. For Chris Bull, the creative force behind Every Other Weekend and former frontman of Manchester indie rockers City Reign, this single feels like a page turned with care. It’s reflective, warm, and brave, with a message that’s undeniably relatable to anyone who’s about to listen.
The song’s emotions are tied and ultimately inseparable from Bull’s journey. Following the loss of his father and musical mentor in 2015, the dissolution of his band the year after, and a series of personal life changes that followed, songwriting became tangled with grief and distance. For a time, the act of writing itself seemed unreachable. “Memories” documents the other side of that silence and his words ring true from the first line onward.
Sonically, the track is lush and beautifully restrained. Rooted in acoustic rock that’s so nice to the ears, it carries a real indie spirit of something that’s a little stripped back instrumentally but still powerful enough to keep you hooked. The instrumentation is bright and vibrant without being overbearing, allowing space for the song to breathe and his voice to truly become the star of the show. Those acoustics shimmer and the arrangement unfolds patiently across its four-minute runtime.
Bull’s vocals sit front and center in the mix, and rightly so. There’s such an honesty in his delivery that could never be manufactured, a sense that every word has been lived with before being sung aloud. His voice carries a ton of reflection just in the tone but he’s also a damn good storyteller too. For us the song felt like it centered on the idea of holding onto memories as something sustaining rather than something that pulls you backward.
There’s really no attempt to chase trends or overwhelm you as a listener. Instead, the song trusts its own emotions and themes for you to get into it all on your own. You’re listening to him sing and at the same time sort of filing through your brain with everything that’s affected you in the past.
As a glimpse into Every Other Weekend’s forthcoming album, due sometime this year, “Memories” feels like a promise kept rather than a teaser shouted. Chris Bull has crafted something that resonates far beyond his own story and leaves it up to you to connect the dots. We’re sincerely excited for whatever’s next, but in the meantime, get into this track and make sure to follow along for plenty more in the works and on the way!
