Fish And Scale’s “Tapestry” threads trauma into transcendence
There’s a quiet kind of bravery in “Tapestry,” the latest single from Fish And Scale, that doesn’t announce itself with grand gestures so much as it unfolds like a memory you didn’t realize you’d been carrying. Clocking in at just two and a half minutes, the track feels less like a song and more like a film reel, spooling through fragments of childhood fear and improbable wonder. The way that he’s written this is legitimately a masterclass in storytelling and that’s one of the many reasons we loved it on the first listen.
Roland Wälzlein, the German songwriter behind the project, draws from a formative experience of an open heart surgery at the age of six. Instead, “Tapestry” reflects that moment through a child’s lens through the cold sterility of hospital rooms. He takes you on a journey all these years later and the song singlehandedly holds all the emotion in the world for such a short runtime.
On the instrumental end it begins with an almost hushed intimacy, led by delicate piano and acoustics that feel close enough to hear the room breathe. Wälzlein’s vocals are the gravitational center here carrying the weight of this lived experience without ever tipping into being overdramatic just for the sake of it. There’s a rawness to his voice that suggests these aren’t just lyrics being sung but memories being carefully exhumed.
As the song progresses, it swells almost imperceptibly at first, layering instrumentation like threads being woven tighter and tighter. By the time it reaches its brief but electrifying crescendo, the track blooms into something anthemic, even cathartic. That sudden burst of rock energy feels earned, like a release valve finally giving way. After a leadup of his words, those piano and guitar lines, you finally made it to the climax and oh boy was it amazing.
Wälzlein doesn’t just revisit trauma, he reshapes it, filtering it through a lifetime of reflection. In the end, “Tapestry” is exactly what its title suggests, a perfect piece of art where each thread, fear, hope, memory, healing, holds its place. He’s outdone himself here and we felt every single moment of it through his words and voice. We urge everyone out there to take a moment and listen to in full and of course to follow along for the latest.
