Johnny Payne grooves the night away on Indie Disco single, “Real Magic”

With “Real Magic,” Johnny Payne steps boldly into a new chapter, one lit by mirrorballs, warm nostalgia, and a pulse that feels impossible to resist. Arriving as the first preview of his upcoming album Dazzle Me, the single is both a reinvention and a reaffirmation, showing off his ability to tap into those classic stylings while keeping his artistry firmly rooted in the present. Teaming up with Canadian indie heavyweights Yukon Blonde, he delivers a track that shimmers with confidence, charm, and a very intentional sense of joy.

From the first moments, “Real Magic” feels like a transportive experience, literally. Payne leans into a 70s-inspired palette with undeniable tight groove patterns, punchy basslines, and a disco energy that taps into the “heritage revivalism” movement currently taking root in indie music. Fans of Drugdealer, Cut Worms, or The Lemon Twigs will feel immediately at home, but Payne isn’t coasting on influence. He’s bending those inspirations toward something unmistakably his own. It’s fully a sound that’s retro in texture but modern in rhythm and spirit. The moment we heard about his influences, considering those are some of our personal favorite bands, we knew the song was going to be a hit!

The collaboration with Yukon Blonde was a stroke of brilliance as well. Known for their instinctive, effortlessly danceable sensibility, they help shape the track into this perfect indie-disco hybrid. The instrumentation is bright and groovy, full of rhythmic layers and melodic touches that reward repeat listens. There’s a crispness to the production that elevates the whole thing with the interplay of guitars and synth accents, the warm glide of the bass, the way every element seems to move in lockstep toward that hook-heavy chorus. There’s no doubt in our collective minds you’ll be humming along by the song’s end.

At the center of it all though is Payne’s voice, which carries an undeniable nostalgia. There’s such a charm to his delivery, a tone that captures the romantic glow of the era he’s channeling while still feeling grounded and real. Lyrically, the track celebrates those moments that make life feel enchanted such as music, movement, romance, and beyond. He doesn’t drown these ideas in abstraction rather presents them with a genuine sense of gratitude.

Ultimately the song works so well because it’s straight up fun. It grooves and it sticks in your head after a single listen. Beneath it all is a thoughtful songwriter embracing the next stage of his evolution. If this is the first peek at Dazzle Me, Payne isn’t just hinting at a strong album, he’s announcing it with a neon-lit flourish.
