Julie Paschke finds beauty in simplicity on single, “Flying Above”
It’s not often we’re immediately taken aback by a first listen of a song. However, Julie Paschke’s “Flying Above” has done exactly that in flooring us with its minimalistic beauty. It’s a quietly mesmerizing single that feels less like a performance and more like a state of mind unfolding in real time. If this happens to be your intro to the artist, we simply cannot think of a better introduction.
Hailing from Melbourne and crafting her music almost entirely on her own, Paschke leans into a kind of artistic solitude that pays dividends. The track begins with little more than acoustic guitar and her voice, but even in its sparseness, it feels complete. There’s an intimacy to the recording that borders on confessional. Her vocals are the gravitational center and are intoxicatingly beautiful, feather-light yet so emotional in the most excellent way.
“Flying Above” is rooted in themes of delusion, but not in a way that feels chaotic or disorienting. Instead, Paschke treats the concept like she’s blurring the edges of reality into something dreamlike and strangely comforting.
As the song progresses, very subtle layers in the production and instrumentation begin to bloom. The introduction of electric guitar in the latter half is a turning point that really sucked us into the arrangement. Our immediate reaction of that atmospheric haze was it feeling like a quintessential Beach House track, but somehow in a way that’s still super fresh. Those doubled vocals were a great choice as well to really deepen the sound without overcomplicating anything either.
At just over four and a half minutes, “Flying Above” never rushes either. It takes its time, allowing each note and lyric to settle. The patience is part of its magic. Everything nowadays is built to grab you within 30 seconds with endless novelties, but this is the complete opposite, and that’s why we loved it.
“Flying Above” is the kind of track that doesn’t demand your attention but earns it anyway, pulling you gently into its orbit and leaving you there. We know you’re going to love it and if you haven’t yet, you must check out the rest of her music. Click those links below to listen in and of course to follow along for more.
