Junket end 10 year hiatus with release of new single, "Red Handed"

Back with their first single of 2021, Junket have just put forth a massive sounding track titled “Red Handed”. We are loving it! Read along with us for our full featured review of their music, as well as a background and insight on the band.

Based out of Orange County, New York, Junket have ended their 10 year musical hiatus with a rocking new single, “Red Handed”. This four-piece alternative rock band have injected a whole lot of love, emotion, and talented instrumentation into the four minute single. Made up of band members, Junket are made up of Chris Wicher (vocals), Michael Miller (guitar), Kyle Hallenbeck (bass) and Chad Babcock (drums).

Filled with “introspective melodies with intense layers of sound”, the song itself was actually inspired by Showtime’s popular TV show Dexter. So the story goes, the lead’s sister catches him in the act one time and they basically form a pact to never tell anyone. We thought it would be fun to write a happy sounding tune to such dark subject matter, and for it to be in first person, like I was actually Dexter talking to Deb. I feel like there’s enough ambiguity for any listener to come up with his or her own meaning that’s relatable to their lives.”

As long time lovers of the show, this has to be the first song we’ve seen in connection with the show, which honestly just makes it that much better! While yes, the lyrics can surely be ambiguous to the subject matter, the point is that the song itself is a clear winner. Considering that the band is back together for the first time in 10 years and that this is their reintroduction into the scene, I think we can confidently say that they’ve knocked it out of the park. If anything, it’s got us incredibly excited to see what else is on the horizon. While they all may not have been playing for those 10 years, let’s just hope there’s cumulative ideas in order to really get back out there.

With so much music being released these days in general, it’s paramount to hook in the listener within the first 30 seconds to a minute. With that being said though, Junket’s first 30 was about as powerful and intoxicating as it possibly gets. We prefer our rock and roll a bit on the heavier side, so when the cavalcade of sound came roaring into our earphones, we were sold. For us, that’s how you create fans and a user base, it’s showing off what you can do early on and we think they’ve ultimately succeeded at doing so.

Speaking on the production for just a moment as well, everything here was mixed perfectly and every member in the band gets their shining moment. Nothing is too drowned out, it’s got a heavy and crunchy feel, yet not too overpowering or overwhelming at the same time. It doesn’t quite border on “metal”, but at the same time we don’t think that’s what the band was aiming to do. Whatever genre you’d like to put them in, it feels as though they’d be capable of pulling off any sound. Everyone is so talented in their own right that an EP or full album of songs would really show their capabilities. Seeing as though the last full length Weapon of Choice was put out in 2010, we think it’s time.

All in all though, in plain and simple terms, “Red Handed” needs to be the next song in your lineup. Crank it up loud, play it proud, and check out the rest of the band’s discography which is also a pleasurable listen. Enjoy!
