Kathy Ross rekindles the spark on new single, "When We Kiss"
There’s something so unbelievably honest about a song that admits love isn’t always easy, and “When We Kiss” from Texas singer-songwriter Kathy Ross is built on that honesty in a perfect way. It’s a candid, emotional look at heartache and the effort it takes to find your way back to each other after a relationship loses its spark. It’s also a gorgeous showcase for one of the most expressive voices we’ve heard lately!
To begin, Ross’s vocals are absolutely sensational here. There’s true beauty and real emotion in every line and she sings with a vulnerability that makes the song feel lived in. You can hear how personal the subject is, from the rocky stretches of a long relationship to the memory of a first kiss that reminds two people why they came together. It’s both polished and completely open and it pulls you in right away from those memorable opening notes.
Instrumentally, the track is rich without ever crowding her out. Recorded at Afterhours Studio in Miami and produced by Grammy-nominated producer Hal Batt, the song has an awesome, full sound that gives the story plenty of room to breathe. Ross co-wrote it with Benji Harris and Kris Bergsnes, and the songwriting has a warmth and clarity that makes it easy to connect with, whether you’re deep in a long-term love or just remembering one. Even better, it was written quickly, no overthinking, just those honest thoughts coming through at the forefront.
The song is already making serious moves and we can’t say we’re surprised! It’s playing in hundreds of retail stores internationally, bringing Ross’s music to shoppers around the world, and the music video has been added to MTV and CMT. It’s linked above so you can check it out yourself.
She started singing at age 6 and first drew national attention as a contestant on “Star Search” back in 1991. Since then she’s delivered more than 1,000 performances, sung the national anthem at arenas across Texas, appeared at festivals throughout the South, and even opened for country legend Merle Haggard. That seasoned confidence shows in every note of “When We Kiss.”
We also had the chance to sit down with Kathy for an interview and it was a great conversation. We talked about her early dream of becoming an artist, the production and process behind this song, and the meaning at the heart of it. She also gave us a look at what’s coming next, including the forthcoming album, and plenty more. Hearing her tell the story only made us appreciate the song even more so make sure to give it a listen or a watch whenever you can.
As the first release from her upcoming 2027 album, “When We Kiss” is a strong, heartfelt start. It’s honest, beautifully sung, and wonderfully produced, and it leaves us eager to hear what Kathy Ross has in store next. So please, go ahead and enjoy it for yourselves!
