Keeble crafts a true album experience on album, "Totemic"
There’s a legitimate magic to records that feel slightly unstable in the best possible way. Albums where every synth pulse sounds like it’s melting under club lights, every groove feels euphoric or anxious, and every hook arrives when you least expect it. Totemic, the stunning debut album from Keeble has quite literally checked all of our personal boxes for what we consider great. Across ten hypnotic tracks, the Essex-based artist has built a world we want to live in that’s danceable, psychedelic, emotionally restless, and impossible not to disappear into.
Operating in a seriously vast overlap between indie pop, psych pop, disco, and plenty more, Keeble crafts music that feels like wandering through a nightclub at the edge of a science-fiction breakdown. We can let you know that from start to finish, the record is an absolute blast. The synth work throughout the album is phenomenal, layered with the kind of obsessive detail that rewards both passive listening and deep headphone immersion. Some moments sparkle with glossy indie-pop immediacy while others dissolve into warped psychedelic textures that feel beautifully disorienting. A personal favorite was “Caged”, maybe because of the wild switch in tone from the opener “Planes”.
Don’t worry though, there’s still a ton of balance spread throughout the whole record. One minute you’re grooving and the other he brings it down a moment for you to catch your breath.
There’s also a really strong thread of 2010’s indie influence woven throughout the album, but it never feels nostalgic just cause. You can hear flashes of that era’s dance-punk grooves sometimes, yet he modernizes those influences with sharper production instincts and a far more immersive sense of atmosphere.
Keeble’s vocals are another major strength across the record. Rhythmic, expressive, and full of tension, the performances consistently elevate the material without overpowering it. Rather than treating vocals as the obvious centerpiece, Keeble often lets the voice drift within the production itself. You’ll probably notice some modulation and effects going on his voice too. Some might think it’s too much, but for us, it only added to the beauty of it all. It’s essentially an art form because he never overdid it in the slightest.
But even at its most psychedelic and abstract, the album never loses its pulse. Basslines slither through the mix with confidence, percussion snaps and ricochets with precision, and nearly every track carries an irresistible momentum that makes standing still feel almost impossible.
By the end of Totemic, the album feels less like a debut and more like an entire alternate reality. Keeble has created a record that’s hypnotic, stylish, charged with energy, and wildly alive. You’ll find yourself dancing, feeling emotional, but most of all, actually feeling something.
