Michellar shares a shimmering Synth Pop anthem on “Do we love us”
If there’s one thing we know for a fact about Michellar’s music is that she’s an absolute shapeshifter when it comes to tackling literally any genre. With “Do we love us,” Michellar walks so many lines with surprising grace, crafting a track that feels as introspective as it is irresistibly catchy. It’s different from what we’ve heard in the past, but ultimately brighter, and even groovy at times.
At its core, she’s said the song is rooted in a deeply personal place. It explores the complexities of relationships, not in grand, sweeping gestures, but in the more nuanced moments. There’s a sense of questioning embedded in the track’s DNA, not just from the song title, but sort of a lingering uncertainty that feels specific. Michellar doesn’t offer easy answers, instead allowing the emotion to sit, breathe, and evolve alongside the music.
Originally conceived as a slower composition, it has been reimagined into something far more dynamic, a shimmering indie synth-pop track that pulses with life. From the bright, synth-heavy arrangements to the crisp electronic drums, the instrumentals overall are exceptional.
“Do we love us” leans into an almost ’80s-inspired palette without feeling trapped by nostalgia. The synths are lush and vibrant, washing over the track in waves of color, while the rhythm section keeps things grounded with a head-nodding groove. There’s a moment midway through where a synth solo cuts through the mix, adding a burst of personality that in our opinion, truly elevated the track into something excellent.
As always, Michellar’s vocals are the glue that holds everything together. They sit comfortably within the mix, never overpowering the instrumentation but never getting lost either. There’s a softness to the delivery, a smooth, inviting tone that makes the song feel approachable.
The production journey, spanning from San Francisco to Romania under the guidance of Marius Alexandru, adds even more. It’s not their first time working together and you can certainly here his touch on the whole song. It’s polished on the instrumental and vocal end, but there’s still plenty of moments that feel raw.
At just around four minutes, “Do we love us” is perfectly paced, as it’s long enough to explore its ideas, but concise enough to leave you wanting another spin. Michellar is clearly in a creative stride, and this is just another strong step forward for the prolific artist!
