Off Judy break the sound barrier on booming debut album, "Good Boy"
Byron Bay’s Off Judy have never been shy about throwing everything they have into their music, but with their debut full-length Good Boy, they’ve kicked down the door to something bigger, sharper, and more explosive than ever before. Across its 11 tracks, the record is a full-bodied sprint through the band’s trademark powerpop-punk energy; hook-heavy, raw, and unashamedly alive. At the center of it all is the feature cut New World Tempo, a track that captures both the restless heart of the album and the relentless pulse of the times we live in.
New World Tempo barrels out of the gate at the beginning with a beat-driven urgency, its ripping basslines and pounding drums urging you forward as if the world itself might leave you behind if you don’t keep up. It’s a sprint about acceleration, about life moving so fast it feels like it’s trying to knock the air from your lungs. It’s the kind of track built for sweaty, late-night rooms where the energy in the crowd bounces right back into the band until both are locked in the same unstoppable tempo. We’re fully convinced seeing this live would change us.
The other ten songs on Good Boy don’t just fill space, we promise, they expand on the same themes with equal firepower. The guitars hit like tidal waves, the drums boom with unrelenting force, and the vocals soar with both melody and defiance. There’s scrappy, big-hearted storytelling woven into the fabric of the record, a sense that Off Judy are not only chronicling the chaos of the present but also daring us to find joy and catharsis in it. Some other personal favorites were “Scared of the Dog”, “Morphine Shot”, and the perfect closer, “Savour the Flavour”.
Though of course there’s obviously some standout tracks across its runtime, for us it quickly became one of those records that sucks you in from the beginning. They manage to keep the quality super high, the instrumentation is always evolving, and those vocals cut right to the core with seriously endless emotion. We suggest you click play and let it run through untouched.
On the production end, once again they’ve worked with their longtime collaborator Alain Decarne at Byron Music Studio. The album has a live-wire quality that makes every note feel urgent, almost as if you’re in the room with them. Off Judy’s partnership with Decarne has clearly matured into something special, tight enough to highlight every jagged edge of the guitars and every thump of the rhythm section, but loose enough to capture the grit and sweat that make this band so compelling.
This isn’t a band trying to play it safe or polish off their rough edges for radio. This is a band who know who they are, who lean into their sweat, grit, and sheer kinetic force, and who emerge with a debut album that feels both timeless and ferociously current. Off Judy have made a record you don’t just listen to, you chase after it, gasping, trying to keep pace.
With all that being said, go ahead and crank this bay way up, and get listening as soon as you can. You can click those links below to follow along as well for the latest…enjoy!
