SYLL shares a storytelling-driven EP with "The Way, The Truth, The Life"

From the opening notes, there's a such a real weight from the storytelling that comes from his lived experience and SYLL's "The Way, The Truth, The Life" embodies that all perfectly. Released on August 21st, 2026, this six song EP marks the first chapter in an ambitious series of upcoming releases from the Manchester artist and it's a genuinely impressive feat of artistry only adding to his voice as a storyteller.

What stood out to us immediately is how much this project plays like a complete album experience rather than a loose collection of songs. At just under twenty minutes, it moves efficiently but it never feels rushed. It’s 100% built to be listened to front to back in one sitting. The structure gives SYLL's storytelling room to really land and it's so methodically clear that a lot of thought went into how these tracks flow into each other. You get eased in gently with “The Wait” and it only goes up from there!

The lyricism throughout is outstanding, tackling subject matter that pushes well beyond typical hip-hop territory. The aforementioned opener "The Wait" digs into the consequences of rushed decisions and lasting personal regret, while "Repeat" pays tribute to former gang members who've turned their experience into mentorship, guiding younger people away from the same mistakes. It's heavy, meaningful material, and SYLL handles it with real nuance rather than melodrama. For us at least, we hung on every single word from song to song.

Even cooler was this record was entirely written, produced, and performed by SYLL, with co-production from Aniff Akinola. That collaboration, which actually traces back decades before recently blossoming into something more focused, shows up in how confidently these tracks blend traditional hip-hop with touches of drill and grime. The production stays fairly chill for most of the runtime, giving the storytelling plenty of space to breathe, but it knows exactly when to ramp things up for that added intensity. Those subtle horns, the atmosphere, every song took us by surprise in adding a little something to truly set it off!

Including previously released singles "Bring Me to Life" and "Used to Be" as the closers alongside the newer material helps give this project a real sense of cohesion. It’s like it tied together different chapters of his life into one unified statement. We confidently think that if this is your intro to the artist, he gives you a perfect taste of everything you may have missed out in the past.

SYLL has set the literal perfect tone for whatever comes next in this planned series and this project alone makes a strong case for him as an artist willing to go somewhere deeper than the genre often asks for. He keeps it real and for us, that’s the baseline for us enjoying a piece of work like this. Everything else was the cherry on top!
