The Retroverts’ "Indistinct Chatter" effortlessly bridge Classic Rock & Modern Soul
There's a fine line between drawing inspiration from the past and simply recreating it. Plenty of artists lean into nostalgia, but only a handful manage to capture the feeling of a classic era while still sounding like themselves! That's exactly where The Retroverts find their sweet spot on Indistinct Chatter, a five-song EP that gracefully blends the warmth of '70s and '80s rock with contemporary production and soulful songwriting.
Formed in Westlake Village, California, by songwriter Richard Berger, The Retroverts arrive with plenty of experience behind them. Berger's previous work has already connected with audiences, but this new project freels like the beginning of an exciting creative chapter rather than a continuation. Joined by guitarist Hefty Chieftain, drummer Chris Byman, and bassist Mark Lang, the band creates an unmistakable chemistry that you can literally feel the fun coming out from.
From the opening moments on “Can’t Feel Nothin”, Indistinct Chatter establishes an atmosphere that is so bright and beautiful. The production is polished and allows every instrument to breathe naturally. At times it sort of evokes memories of classic yacht rock and sophisticated pop-rock, yet those modern flourishes keep everything feeling super present. Instead of chasing one specific era, The Retroverts build a bridge between decades. This record is for everyone!
The guitar work deserves particular praise as well, because oh boy is it smooth. Throughout the EP, shimmering leads and tasteful melodic lines add texture without ever becoming excessive. “Fly” was a major standout with that slightly psychedelic reverb at times.
Equally impressive is the band's use of synthesizers. Rather than leaning on them as a gimmick, The Retroverts weave those textures naturally into the songs, all the while creating lush soundscapes that complement the guitars beautifully.
At the center of everything are the vocals, which bring a metric ton of confidence and soul. There isn’t really a particular standout song on that front, mainly because they sort of act as more of an instrument at times. They don’t overpower the mix ever, just kind of flow with the rest of the music and help to create that mood.
Across all five songs, the band maintains their artistic identity while allowing more than enough variation to keep you rockin’ and rollin. Dreamy passages give way to more energetic moments, soulful grooves sit comfortably alongside classic rock influences, and every song feels like you’re in the midst of a true “album experience”.
With Indistinct Chatter, The Retroverts deliver an impressive record that establishes exactly who they are. If this release is any indication, the band have found a sound that honors the past while keeping both feet planted firmly in the present.
