Tors Bring an Outstanding Show to SLC's The Soundwell
An artist's entrance to their show makes a mark. Tors’s intro to their set was a calm male audio talking about birds, nature documentary style. Each band member was introduced as their own bird. Never did I ever think I would hear a nature documentary at a concert, but I stand corrected. The UK band is comprised of two brothers Matt and Theo Weedon, and their friend Jack Bowden. I have followed them for a couple years now, first finding them on social media with their acapella renditions of their songs in stairwells. I am still in awe of their harmonies and the genuine angelic sound that comes from them singing together. Their show at the Soundwell in Salt Lake City, Utah last weekend brought me back to those videos. I would like to say that Utah is a very loud crowd, we know our music when we go to a show. During one of the final songs of the set, the band came into the crowd and sang “Only For You”, witnessing this was nothing short of spiritual. Tears were shed, hands on hearts, and soft smiles from everyone in the room.
Lets just say, SLC has made a lasting impression on this band. Last year the Johnson family found out that the band was going on tour but only stopping in LA and NY when coming to the US. If you thought this would fly, you’re wrong. The family flew out the band to Utah, found a wedding venue and had their own show with the band. This same family showed up to the Soundwell and had a stamp of pride for this band that they love so dearly. Matt had given them a shoutout multiple times throughout the set, they were easily the loudest people in the room.
Everyone at the show had a look of awe in their eyes, the people working the bar, the ones in the sound board, the security, and obviously the fans had a glisten in their eyes of home. Heads tilted, swaying and dancing to the music. You could see their souls filled with joy and safety through their smiles. Not only was the show filled with peace, our boys performing were hilarious. Matt prefaced each song with its significance to co-bandmember Jack’s love life. The whole set was the story of his love life. When it got emotional, the band was quick to also bring a light hearted laugh to each person through their questions to the audience or comments to the crowd.
“It was a low point in his life picks a slow soft sequence on the guitar, mine as well because he slept on my couch for a few weeks”.
A routine while on tour is for the band to invite people up on stage to dance to one of the final songs of their set. They brought up kids and parents to dance alongside them for yet another wholesome moment. The pure excitement from each person on stage and the audience hyping up each of them was infectious. You can tell each person had their own relationship with each song played. Singing to their friend, family, or significant other beside them, each person had a story to share. What a beautiful group of people Tors was able to bring together, to love one another through emotional highs and lows. The band closed out the night by saying they want the show to be remembered: “For one night only, no matter who you are, we can all be kind and love one another. Tomorrow if you get the chance, be kind to someone new”.
