1Halfof2Trees crafts his own world on expansive EP, "Refuge"
1Halfof2Trees returns with an outstanding new EP, “Refuge,” a cinematic indie pop collection that showcases the Florida-based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Scott Kowalik at the height of his creative powers. Spanning several immersive tracks, the EP has quickly shown to be a masterclass in mood-driven songwriting, blending spacious guitars, subtle synth textures, and intricate production to craft something that’s so perfectly original and fresh feeling.
From the first track “Home”, the listener is drawn into a carefully constructed world where guitars (acoustic and electric) weave seamlessly with minor-key synths and understated percussion. Kowalik’s attention to detail ensures that each element occupies its own space, creating something super expansive that keeps you hooked! His production style is meticulous, but it does such a good job of playing that balancing act and allowing his vocals to serve as the emotional center. He really hits those high notes in such a confident way.
Whether evoking the solitude of introspection or the fleeting moments of shared experience, “Refuge” consistently finds ways to translate emotion into melody and arrangement. Each song flows effortlessly into the next, yet maintains its own identity. Through “The Stars at Night”, “Wake”, and “Waiting for the World to End”, it’s actually kind of crazy the flow they have. It’s so difficult to create a signature sound, but we sincerely felt he’s done that with ease here.
The instrumentation on the EP is also undoubtedly a highlight with slick bass lines, restrained drums, and layers of guitar and synth that create a literal wall of sound at times. Tracks feel at once lush and intimate, balancing moods, and make all that indie pop feels alive. It’s sort of difficult to narrow it down to one element of the song, rather the mix and the confidence comes through and pulls you right on in.
Without a shred of a doubt, “Refuge” confirms 1Halfof2Trees as a singular voice in contemporary indie pop. Scott’s dedication to artistry, from writing and performing to full production, has give us a deeply immersive listening experience. Though he doesn’t play live, what we’d do to see these songs played live is almost out of comprehension.
Regardless, it’s a “headphones only” type of listen for us and we urge you to do the same. Go ahead and get on into this as soon as you can and make sure to follow along for more by clicking those links below.
