Andy Smythe’s "Quiet Revolution Extra" expands an already remarkable vision

When we reviewed Andy Smythe’s Quiet Revolution, we were immediately struck by the sheer beauty of it all. It felt like the work of a songwriter who had spent decades refining his craft and understanding exactly how to connect with listeners on a profound emotional level. Now, with Quiet Revolution Extra, the London-based multi-instrumentalist returns not with an afterthought or a collection of leftovers, but with a companion EP that meaningfully expands upon that record in the best way possible.

At six songs and 26 minutes, Quiet Revolution Extra is concise in its length but remarkably expansive in scope. Rather than simply revisiting familiar territory, Smythe uses the EP to explore new dimensions of the cinematic, socio-political storytelling that has become one of his defining strengths. It’s definitely both connected to and distinct from the original album, offering up a fresh perspective while maintaining everyting perfect that made Quiet Revolution such an outstanding listen!

One of the EP’s greatest strengths, once again and unsurprisingly, is Smythe’s voice. Throughout the record, his vocals are silky smooth as he carries these storylines along with ease. There’s a warmth and sincerity in his delivery that draws you in not only to the instrumentation, but the words. Even when tackling larger themes, he never loses sight of the personal element.

Musically, Quiet Revolution Extra is simply gorgeous. Rich brass arrangements add depth and character, while sweeping violins make almost each and every song feel like they could be dropped in a movie. Driving acoustic rock passages provide all the energy, but you get a ton of grit too from the harmonicas!

Smythe moves seamlessly between “quirky, foot-tapping pop sensibilities” and deeply vulnerable poetry, demonstrating the breadth of his songwriting abilities. Believe us, there are many. The transitions feel natural because every song is guided by the same thoughtful artistic vision. You get introduced through “Higher Truth” and the journey only picks up from there on out. Another huge favorite from us was “Monet Is Smiling”

To be honest, it’s no surprise that Smythe has earned praise over the years from respected figures in the genre. Across eight albums and two decades of songwriting, he has quietly built a body of work defined by so many of his talents that consistently come together to create these legitimate album experiences. Quiet Revolution Extra is 100% another significant chapter in that story.

These songs are cinematic, introspective, meaningful, and undeniably beautiful. Though it is labeled as a companion piece, Quiet Revolution Extra stands confidently on its own while deepening the impact of the album that inspired it. For those who admired Quiet Revolution (which you should listen to as well!), this EP is an essential continuation of the journey. It’s the perfect intro to jump backwards and give a spin to everything you might’ve missed.
