Silver Dawn’s "I Don’t Know What I Don’t Know" finds beauty in uncertainty

From the opening moments you immediately get thrown into the deep end for what essentially became a wild ride of sound design and incredible art. On I Don’t Know What I Don’t Know, the bedroom musician Silver Dawn taps into something completely new to us, crafting an experimental glitch pop journey that is the literal definition of adventurous. It’s a track that thrives on unpredictability, embracing uncertainty both thematically and musically while giving some of the most inventive production choices we’ve experienced this year!

Silver Dawn’s relationship with music has always been deeply personal. Raised in a household where vinyl records were treated with near sacred reverence by her father, she learned early on that music could be a portal into memory or even self-discovery. That perspective echoes throughout I Don’t Know What I Don’t Know, a song that feels less concerned with providing concrete answers and more interested in exploring the questions that linger beneath.

What immediately stands out has to be the production. This isn’t electronic music that settles into comfortable patterns. Silver Dawn constructed a constantly shifting landscape of fractured beats, glitching textures, warped melodies, and detours that kept us guessing every single moment. The first half is particularly dizzying, like a whirlwind of experimental sound design that feels like her train of thought coming out in music form. To call it fascinating would somehow still be an understatement.

Don’t worry though because in the latter half it finds its footing and feels like you’ve been experiencing the buildup without ever actually realizing it. Just when you begin to wonder where the journey is heading, Silver Dawn alters course. The song slows its pace and becomes more reflective, and the digital abstraction of it all eases a tad.

While the lyrics contribute to the atmosphere, we felt that this is a piece that communicated most powerfully through all of its winding moods or textures. We thought she understood quite well that sometimes a carefully crafted environment like this can say more than words ever could.

With I Don’t Know What I Don’t Know, Silver Dawn took the biggest risk possible, and in our opinion, it completely paid off at the end of its runtime. It’s a song full of twists, turns, and unconventional ideas, but beneath its experimental lies a ton of emotion. Surrender whatever you think you’re about to hear, open your mind, grab some headphones, and get into it!
