CAT NOVA ignites a New Era with a gorgeous listen, "I F L Y"
Hearing an artist step out from behind old projects and finally take full ownership of the spotlight is such a beautiful thing! As the new solo venture from the former frontwoman of Oxford's The Courtesy Kill and At Risk, CAT NOVA arrives here with a single called "I F L Y” that feels perfectly cinematic, dark, and completely her own.
From the outset, this is a vocal forward track, and rightfully so. Her vocals carry so much of the song's emotional weight, and they're given plenty of room to do exactly that within a mix that feels lush without ever crowding her out. The piano work throughout is a real standout too, cinematic in the truest sense, giving the song a really serious tone. It's paired with drums that stay subtle for much of the track but carry such a power underneath. They add plenty of weight when necessary and honestly added so much to the atmosphere and texture of the whole track.
Trust us when we say that atmosphere really is massive here. The production creates this huge, enveloping sense of space, and the instrumentation steadily builds in intensity as the song progresses. If you thought it was emotional at the beginning, just wait. We thought it really rewarded patience as it pulls you further in with every passing second until it reaches the climax.
Lyrically, this is dark romantic territory according to the artist. The repeated mantra of "I fucking love you" was so so powerful, blunt and raw in a way that cuts right through all the polish surrounding it. Pairing such an unfiltered, visceral phrase with such elegant, atmospheric production, and that contrast becomes one of the song's most memorable qualities. It felt less like a lyric and more like an outburst. Sometimes you need to say how you feel without sugarcoating it.
At just over three minutes, "I F L Y" never overstays its welcome while still giving its buildup the space it needs to land properly. Coming as part of the same creative chapter that introduced her debut single "PARALLEL WORLD," this track continues to show off exactly the kind of atmospheric indie-pop world she’s building for herself.
It’s a bold, beautifully produced statement, serious, and cinematic and those are just a few of the things we adored about it.
