Rafael Montecruz serves up a reflective smooth jam on "Under the Cherry Tree"

There's something so lovely about songs built around memory and reflection, like the kind that let you sit quietly with a moment long after it's passed. This brand new one, "Under the Cherry Tree" captures that feeling in such a bright way. Rafael Montecruz, a singer, songwriter, and storyteller whose work has always centered on love, family, and personal experience, delivers a genuinely lovely piece of indie pop here. Trust us when we say it’s chill and understated in the best possible way.

Montecruz began his musical journey writing in Spanish before branching into English compositions back in 2023. That shift has brought real recognition along the way, including wins at Festival de la Canción in both 2023 and 2024, along with a semi-finalist finish in the ISC competition and a finalist spot in the USA Songwriting Competition. Some incredible recognition for his work and we promise that comes through wonderfully here. "Under the Cherry Tree" undoubtedly continues that trend nicely.

At its core, he’s let us know this is a song about love, reflection, and those particular moments that linger with us well after time has moved on. It's a contemplative theme and the music matches that mood perfectly. This is a smooth and easygoing jam from top to bottom. It settles in comfortably rather than demanding attention, but the emotional depth reveals itself gradually rather than all at once.

The vocals here are exceptional. There's a sincerity in the delivery that makes the song's reflective themes feel lived in and that authenticity goes a long way in making the whole track resonate. The guitar work supporting those vocals is understated but really nice. It does just enough to really give the song a cool backbone.

However, things really pick up toward the end with a fun little guitar solo that caps the whole track off with a nice bit of oomph after all that smooth, reflective build up!

Longtime collaborator Abraham Armell also plays a role in bringing this track to life and his involvement clearly adds something meaningful to the final product. He’s clearly rounded out the creative partnership Montecruz has built since first branching out. We can’t wait to hear more from the both of them!

All in all, "Under the Cherry Tree" is a lovely, easy listen, full of heart and quiet introspection. It's a strong addition to Rafael Montecruz's growing catalog, which you should definitely check out.
