Drew Russell captures beauty on Folk Rock single, “Pocket Watch”
Drew Russell’s “Pocket Watch” immediately offers something refreshingly different than you might be used to. Rather than celebrating certainty or destination, the Australian singer & songwriter explores the often overlooked space in between, like those moments when life seems to be rushing ahead while you're left standing still. The end up is a deeply affecting folk-rock single that balances introspection with optimism, all the while being wrapped in a warm yet bright musical landscape.
At just over three and a half minutes, “Pocket Watch” manages to feel expansive without overstaying its welcome. Russell uses vivid imagery to paint a portrait of uncertainty that will surely resonate with anyone navigating a major life transition. Believe us when we say this song is super relatable, but still has plenty of universality about it. However what made us gravitate to it is its refusal to surrender to the hopelessness. Instead, it acknowledges fear while quietly leaving the door open for hope. There are plenty of uplifting moments here lyrically, but also in the instrumental.
The songwriting is undeniably one of the track’s greatest strengths. We felt Russell allowed you to project your own experiences into the song’s journey. Whether someone is facing a career change, recovering from loss, or simply questioning where they fit in the world, “Pocket Watch” provided a soundtrack for reflection.
On the musical end, the song struck a beautiful balance between folk intimacy and atmospheric grandeur. Warm acoustics form the foundation, but subtle textures and carefully layered production elevated the arrangement into something much more cinematic. The sheer crispness of the instrumentation is immediately noticeable. Every acoustic strum or atmospheric flourish added so much to the background.
Another major highlight for us was Russell’s voice sitting prominently high in the mix, and rightly so. His vocal performance is the centerpiece of the track. There’s a natural sincerity in his delivery that immediately draws you in and he definitely got a chance to show off his range, but not in a “look at me” way.
The production also deserves some praise for understanding exactly what the song requires. Nothing was ever excessive or distracting. The instrumentation is right where it needed to be, it’s going those subtle effects going in the background for some depth, but ultimately it’s stripped back shifting the focus to what he’s actually saying.
