Indie rockers, Find The Red Sparrow, share their latest single, "Below"

Review by Austin Sher

Toronto, Canada’s own, Find The Red Sparrow, has just shared with us their fantastic new single, titled “Below”. Read along with us as we give an in-depth review into what we thought of the song, as well as a bit of background on the band as well.

Before we dig into what we thought of the song, we’d love for you to familiarize yourself a bit with Find The Red Sparrow. Find The Red Sparrow is an indie synth-rock band from Toronto/Ottawa, Canada. The band includes Dean Lundrigan (vocals, guitar) and Chris Martin (Guitar, bass, percussion, production) as regular members, and Brad Clarke and Steve Fry as contributing players. The music is meant to be a fun and creative way to call up our heroes (Wilco, Iron and Wine, Low, Brian Fallon, and The Shins) through sound and lyrical imagery.

Listening through for the first time, without knowing their influences, I immediately thought to myself that this is a beautiful hybrid of Wilco and The Shins. So if that’s what they were going for, then they absolutely nailed it! Let’s just say Jeff Tweedy would be quite proud if and when he hears “Below”.

Onto the music now, this is a lovely and fully fleshed out track that we thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. The early chord progressions were very reminiscent of early 2000’s Wilco and as soon as the dual vocals came in, we were hooked. The finger picking throughout the song was near flawless and overall the lyrics were quite soothing. It took me a few listens to really hear what they were saying in terms of message, but that really only allowed us to appreciate the instrumentation even more. Their sound specifically wouldn’t be considered even close to a “hard” rock sound, but a bit of grunge guitar and booming drums were a nice addition.

What sold us the most was the killer guitar solo that popped up around the midway point. It came out of nowhere but was extremely welcomed and encouraged. Skipping to the end, the drums really found their stride and tied the entire track together. I have to say, I really didn’t have any expectations going into listening, but I was blown away by what I heard. It honestly left me wanting more, in terms of a full album.

Thankfully though, according to Find The Red Sparrow, the album is being recorded across cities but is primarily produced through Chrome Robot Studio in Ottawa and will be released in the Fall of 2020. That’s super exciting to hear because of a full album of these style of tracks will be great! They’ve even let us know that two more singles are on the way, "Thursday Everyday" and "Never Grow Old", which will be released in the coming weeks.
