Heddy Edwards goes all out with EP, "The Other Side of hell is a heaven so delicate."
Its been 4 long years since we last reviewed Heddy Edwards, and immediately on this EP’s opener, she’s completely blown us away once again. Her debut EP to the world, The Other Side of hell is a heaven so delicate. is five captivating tracks that take you on a literal journey through her life and beyond. The Chicago-born, Virginia-based singer-songwriter, producer, and poet has unveiled a body of work that feels deeply personal while remaining remarkably universal. She’s shared something that’s genuinely unforgettable and we’re quite excited for you all to dig in.
The story behind the project alone is compelling. After spending a decade without writing a song, Edwards found herself inspired to finally pursue her lifelong dream of creating and releasing music following a car accident that became a turning point in her life. That experience, combined with her journey toward reconciling longstanding mental health struggles, formed the emotional foundation of this EP. These songs have obviously emerged from her life, but we think they leave enough space for you to find your own stories within them.
Musically, the record occupies a fascinating space between dream pop, atmospheric electronic moments at times, and modern pop songwriting. Yet even those labels feel slightly inadequate. Edwards is clearly drawing from familiar influences, but the final result feels uniquely her own. She’s got her own sonic identity throughout the record, one built on lush synths, immersive textures, and a sound design that could be studied. Just the opener “Black tunnel” on its own sat us down in our seats ready to go for more.
Right off the bat, the production is extraordinary. Layers drift in and out of focus, subtle details emerge, and arrangements evolve in ways that continually keep listeners engaged. This is a headphones record, so please prepare yourselves. It never settles into predictability. Each song introduces new ideas while remaining connected to the larger landscape of the project.
At the center of everything though has to be Edwards’ voice. Her vocal performances are breathtaking throughout the EP. Sometimes her voice feels less like a lead instrument and more like another texture woven into the fabric of the songs.
The project grapples with identity, healing, purpose, and self-discovery, yet it remains filled with beauty and hope. The title itself serves as a fitting summary of the record’s worldview. Even within darkness, Edwards searches for light. At the end of it all, it still feels optimistic.
For a debut EP, The Other Side of hell is a heaven so delicate. is remarkably assured. Heddy Edwards has not simply released a promising first complete project. She has created what we can only hope is a long line of records just like it. As mentioned, you should definitely grab a pair of headphones and get listening closely.
