Jeffrey Chan's "Boys Like Us: The Afters" keeps the party alive until sunrise
When the lights come up at the end of a great night out and you’re left with nothing but a smile and new memories, somehow that’s exactly how this record makes you feel. On Boys Like Us: The Afters, Los Angeles-based Australian pop artist Jeffrey Chan captures that exact feeling with an insane precision, delivering an EP that feels like the soundtrack to those fragile hours between the dancefloor and daylight.
Serving as a continuation of his breakout Boys Like Us project, The Afters expands Jeffrey’s musical universe while deepening everything it already started. Across nine tracks, he expertly blends a club-ready production with introspective songwriting, creating a collection that’s ready for packed dancefloors.
You can feel the inspiration from some of his influences like Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, or Robyn, but he does it in a way that still feels effortless and natural. The beats hit hard, the synths shimmer and pulse, and the energy remains consistently high. From the moment you hit the play button on “Looking”, you’re sucked into a literal vortex that unfolds throughout its near 30 minute runtime.
The production here is killer! Every element is meticulously crafted, from the towering electronic textures to the dark-pop undercurrents that run throughout the record. Jeffrey clearly understands how to build momentum. We’ve reviewed his music enough times to know he’s the mastermind behind the greatness you’re about to endure. The transitions between tracks are particularly impressive too. The feeling of “album experience” is there, like things are getting crazier as the night goes on.
Jeffrey’s vocal performance is another major strength, but there’s no surprise there. He delivers each track with conviction and confidence. There’s a charisma to his voice that makes even the most intimate lyrics feel universal. The production, effects, and everything else do so much in the background, but he’s 100% the constant that brings the EP back down to Earth.
With Boys Like Us: The Afters, Jeffrey Chan has shown us yet again that he’s a visionary trying to have a great time in the process. This is a bold, energetic, and deeply fun release that showcases his growth as both a songwriter and performer. The hooks, the darkness, the rawness of it all is unmatched!
