The Amanda Emblem Experiment's "Lazy Sunday" finds beauty in taking it slow
There are just too many artists out there nowadays focusing on the pristine polish and gimmicky nature of music that feels like it’s trying too hard to capture your attention. Lazy Sunday by The Amanda Emblem Experiment is the complete opposite in that it immediately feels like a welcome invitation to slow down and simply enjoy the moment. The Queensland, Australia-based artist returns with a concise 3 track EP that embraces simplicity and an easygoing spirit, proving that sometimes the most impactful music is also the most understated.
Following the release of her 10 track album The Wood last year, Amanda Emblem has clearly taken time to reflect on where she wanted to go next creatively. Rather than chasing bigger production or more elaborate arrangements, Lazy Sunday moves in the opposite direction. It’s a collection that feels intentional in its restraint, allowing every note, lyric, and melody room to breathe. You legitimately feel like you’re in the room with the band. Clocking in at just under ten minutes, the EP moves quick, but it left us with a giant smile on our faces.
The opener is the title track, “Lazy Sunday”, and somehow the song title embodies the entire “chill” feel of the song. Her vocals serve as the emotional anchor for the entire project, but there's an unforced quality to her delivery that recalls the best singer-songwriters. “Old Romantic” goes in a similar direction but undoubtedly feels like the instrumentation picks up a ton. Don’t get us wrong, it still very much has that laidback feel, but just a tad more energy keeping you engaged from start to finish.
On the genre side, it occupies this charming space between folk, country, Americana, and roots music. The influence of the late J.J. Cale is evident in the EP's relaxed grooves and unhurried approach, yet Amanda never feels like she's imitating a particular style. She borrows from those traditions to create something distinctly her own, and that she does! Twangy guitars weave throughout the songs, while a smattering of other instrumental moments slide in when you least expect it. Though on the closer “Blues Skies Calm Seas”, dare we say we sensed a little psychedelia on the latter half? You’ll just have to see for yourselves.
There really is a breezy confidence to the entire production though, like she understands that the songs don't need excessive embellishment to make their impact. The more relaxed approach becomes the EP's greatest strength. The music captures the feeling of a carefree afternoon, balancing lightheartedness with genuine craftsmanship. Even as the project leans into laid-back vibes, there's an impressive level of musicianship and attention to detail beneath the surface. Every guitar line, harmony, and vocal choice contributes to the overall mood.
With Lazy Sunday, The Amanda Emblem Experiment delivers a delightful reminder that great music doesn't always need to shout to be heard.
