Jessamine Barham lets her vocals rise up on an honest single, “Peasant Girl’s Lament”
We’ve reviewed Jessamine Barham many times and she keeps finding new ways to surprise us. “Peasant Girl’s Lament” is a medieval folk song with a wink and a whole lot of heart. It might be the most intriguing entry in her catalog and it’s an easy one to fall for. We highly recommend you check it out!
The premise is simple and charming. It’s about a peasant girl who dreams of being a princess, even though she knows it’s never going to happen. That’s a lovely setup for a folk song and Barham plays with it in a way that feels both timeless and relatable. There’s a storybook quality to the idea, but the feelings underneath are very real. Everyone has wanted something that felt just out of reach, and she captures that with with ease!
The song is honest to say the least. It’s a little self-aware and self-deprecating at times, and she leans into that with a sense of humor that never gets in the way of the emotion. There are moments that feel hopeful too, like the dream hasn’t completely died even if reality keeps tapping her on the shoulder. It never gets too sweet or too sad but it sits in that honest middle ground, and that’s where the song really shines.
You’ll quickly realize that this is very much a vocal and lyric forward song and Barham’s voice carries it beautifully. Her vocals continue to impress, and it genuinely sounds like she’s getting even better with each release. There’s warmth and personality in every line, and she delivers the story like someone who’s in on it and feels every word of it. It’s catchy, too, in a way that sneaks up on you. The melody sticks around long after the song ends and we know for a fact we’ve been humming along since our first collective listen.
The instrumentation is sparse but perfectly chosen. An acoustic guitar anchors the song, and a bass line enters midway through, giving the track a subtle lift right when it needs one. There’s also what sounds like maracas, which add a rhythmic touch and keep things light on their feet.
It knows exactly what it wants to be and it delivers with charm and confidence. It’s also a reminder of what makes Barham such a joy to follow. She’s an artist who can be clever, vulnerable, and funny all in the same song. Sincerely, we’ve loved everything she’s put out over the years.
