Kevin Buckley shares his genre expansive debut, "Big Spring"

Incorporating a mass amount of genre and style into his debut album Big Spring, Kevin Buckley has more than delivered on this first output. Please read on for a closer look into the record, as well as a background on the artist.

Right off the bat, you'll quickly hear the Irish influences coming in through Kevin Buckley’s Big Time, but he’s also managed to effortlessly incorporate his love for Old Time, Bluegrass, and so much more. Recorded fully at Buckley’s in-home studio, it’s beyond impressive that he was able to get such a high quality recording considering the immense amount of instrumentation involved. In our opinion, this is a record we suggest you check out as soon as you get a free moment.

Over the course of 12 rich sounding tracks, spanning right around 39 minutes, Kevin leaves nothing to the imagination as far as his originality and emotion goes. We mentioned that there’s so much playfulness surrounding genres on Big Spring, but it’s almost as if each song takes on a little life and atmosphere of its own. You get thrown immediately into the mix with the instrumental opener “Sweeney’s Wheel” and the lyrics don’t actually enter until “The Blackest Crow”. In the journey and experience of the record though, Buckley consistently keeps the listener guessing as to what’s coming next. Without a doubt, you’re not going to feel complacent or like you’re hearing the same thing over and over.

With help from mixing engineer Dave Sinko (The Punch Brothers, Bela Fleck), the two collaborators truly brought these songs to life in a way that we can’t imagine. The sheer talent on the instrumentation side could be talked about for days on end due to its complexity, but the way that everything pops so vibrantly from start to finish is a success in its own right. To be honest, this isn’t typically the style of music that gets sent to us on a consistent basis, but it’s something that’s quickly grown on us during our initial listen.

We can’t wait for everyone out there to give this a proper listen. It’s virtually guaranteed to brighten up your days, so please get to it when you can! All the links below to listen and to follow along for more can be found below.
