Mathieu Karsenti mesmerizes on 3-track EP, "When The Hummingbird Stops"
Mathieu Karsenti takes the complete opposite approach to everything that’s “popular” nowadays on his newest work, and that’s why we love him. When The Hummingbird Stops is an invitation to slow down, observe, and to rediscover the depth that can exist in silence just as much as in sound. Across three pieces, Karsenti crafts an instrumental EP that feels remarkably expansive, transforming a simple concept into a profoundly moving listening experience through an elegant performance.
Inspired by the hummingbird, a creature synonymous with constant movement, the project explores the quiet transformation that occurs when perpetual motion gives way to reflection. Rather than depicting the frantic energy of modern life alone, Karsenti becomes fascinated with what happens when everything briefly pauses.
That absence of lyrics becomes one of the EP's greatest strengths. You really don’t need words in this one to actually feel something. Every emotion, every shift in mood, or narrative turn emerges entirely through the expressive capabilities of the violin.
The EP consists of three interconnected works, the original composition alongside two carefully developed variations. Of course, you should experience all three in full. Rather than simply revisiting familiar material, each version reveals new dimensions. We urge you to really listen closely to experience the subtleties in the differences.
Stylistically, Karsenti's writing finds a balance between Impressionism, minimalism, and subtle Baroque influences. Delicate harmonic colors drift through the arrangements, while repeating motifs gradually evolve feeling almost hypnotic at times.
Helena Maria Falk's performances across all three pieces deserve tremendous recognition too! Her command of the violin allows every phrase to breathe with remarkable emotional nuance. Whether the music calls for quiet introspection or soaring intensity, her playing is consistently expressive.
The production also deserves a ton of praise for how everything sounds in your headphones. Classical recordings often succeed or fail based on how faithfully they capture both intimacy and intensity, and When The Hummingbird Stops excels on both fronts. Every nuance of the instrumental is just downright gorgeous. Again, make sure you listen where you can really enjoy everything this has to offer.
All in all, these tracks run around 11 minutes in total, and we’re urging you to check out all of them. Mathieu Karsenti has continued to blow us away with everything he’s put out and this is no exception. We’ve put all the links below so that you can listen in, follow along, and of course stay tuned for plenty more.
