Matt Tarka takes aim at Institutional Power with "Letter to the Editor"
There's almost nothing better than hearing an artist channel genuine frustration into something this sharp and purposeful. His latest "Letter to the Editor" does exactly that with a power that’s almost unexplainable. Freshly released on October 2nd, 2026, this latest single from the Lancaster, Pennsylvania singer-songwriter Matt Tarka marks his most direct confrontation yet with institutional power and trust us when we say it lands with real force.
The song takes specific aim at The Washington Post's Editorial Board and their decision not to endorse a candidate in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election, a choice Tarka views as a departure from the paper's own "Democracy Dies in Darkness" ethos. It's a bold subject for a song and thankfully Tarka doesn't shy away from making his perspective clear. We’ve got more than enough love songs these days, we’re thrilled he’s stepped it up with the political anthems to be perfectly honest.
Recorded at Mixtape Studios in Alexandria, Virginia with his longtime collaborator Jarrett Nicolay producing, the track is built around acoustic rock instrumentation that hits a lot harder than you might expect from that description alone. The acoustic guitar work is powerful throughout, driving the song forward with intensity, while the drums stay subtle but incredibly effective. The bass lines are super riveting too, weaving underneath everything and giving the track a propulsive energy from start to finish.
Though the instrumental is great, we felt this is very much a vocal and lyric focused song and that's exactly where it should be given the subject matter. Tarka's vocals sit right in the middle of the mix, and he brings a ton of momentum and real oomph to the performance, sounding confident and committed throughout. There's a conviction in his delivery that makes the whole track feel urgent, like something he genuinely needed to get off his chest.
Having self-released music since 2011, Tarka continues to prove himself as an artist unafraid to tackle subjects most songwriters might shy away from. This one is obviously a great example of that willingness. It's meaningful without being overly heavy handed and the instrumentation backs that intensity up at every turn.
With a release show coming up on October 23rd at The Nest in Lancaster alongside Lemon Valley and Wedding Funeral, this is 100% a fitting moment for Tarka to bring this track to a live audience. Truly, with the elections right around the corner, this should be playing everywhere as a reminder.
"Letter to the Editor" is unsurprisingly another killer track from Matt Tarka. It’s sharp, driven, and unafraid to say exactly what it means. Give it a spin, send it to your friends, and make sure to follow along for hopefully plenty more in the works. Enjoy!
