Paul Dunne delivers a Riff-Soaked jolt of energy with "Coffee"
Within the first 30 seconds, this is exactly the type of song that grabs you by the collar and doesn't let go. "Coffee" from Paul Dunne does exactly that in the absolute coolest way. Written, performed, and recorded entirely by Dunne himself, this track is an absolute blast, a “double shot of riffage straight to the brain” that never once lets its foot off the gas. Prepare for a joy ride.
At its core, this is garage rock through and through, but it's also surprisingly approachable, which is a tricky balance in the genre. There's seemingly a synthesizer running underneath the guitars here that gives the whole thing a slight electrorock edge, but it never loses that raw, gritty foundation.
Dunne's vocals sit right in the middle of the mix and the placement is perfect. They're straightforward and powerful, raw in all the right ways, yet somehow still intimate despite how much energy is surrounding them. There's 100% a real Ty Segall-esque quality running through the whole track. Plenty of chaos and distortion while still keeping real feeling at the center of it all.
"Coffee" is built around restlessness, free will, and that reckless urge to fly a little too close to the sun. Rather than resisting that chaos, we felt the song finds a strange kind of peace within it, accepting the insanity that comes with actually being present in this world. The instrumentation mirrors that sentiment perfectly as it’s heavy and powerful, but never loses the emotional core underneath all that noise.
Of course and unsurprisingly, the guitar work throughout is incredible! It’s loaded with real bite and personality. It drives the whole track forward with a relentless momentum that keeps your body gyrating giving "Coffee" its anthemic feel from the first riff to the last.
It's loud and heavy, sure, but you’ve got to realize there’s legitimate craft in how it's put together and that balance always keeps it from ever feeling messy. It just feels alive, like a burst of pure, unfiltered energy caught perfectly on tape. We’ve reviewed Paul before and he’s definitely found that rhythm in his more recent tracks. This one encapsulates that feel in the best way!
This is absolutely the kind of song that makes you want to hit play again the second it ends. We recommend you listen loud, trust us. Go ahead and click those links below to listen in and of course to follow along for more!
