Nath Tavares serves up a genre-spanning journey on "See Attachment" - Interview
This artist has quite literally pulled from an entire lifetime of influences and somehow made it all feel completely cohesive. Nath Tavares has accomplished a seemingly possible feat on her new album, "See Attachment." This is an absolute blast of an album, one that comes together to create an incredible range of sounds and stories into something that feels both sprawling and deeply personal.
Tavares has lived a genuinely global life, shaped by her time spent across Brazil, Mexico, China, the United States, France, and Portugal. Her borderless upbringing shows up all over this record! Pop and “urban” production collide throughout with Brazilian funk, salsa, mariachi, and merenguetón, while glimmers of musical theatre give the whole project a wonderful narrative. There are moments here that genuinely feel Broadway-esque, especially the opener of the same name as the record. The whole thing is full of storytelling flair and that theatrical feel gives the album plenty of drama and momentum as it moves through its different chapters.
On the making of it, Tavares wrote it during an intense twelve day period, crafting one song a day until she felt the larger story had fully taken shape, and producer Nano Moreno then spent four months helping shape those initial demos into the polished, fully realized album we get here. Everything feels confident, complete, and spontaneous in its emotional honesty but clearly refined with care.
Obviously we’ve got to talk about her vocals because they’re excellent throughout. Versatile enough to move gracefully between all these different genres without ever losing their own distinct voice is one of the hardest things you can do. The instrumentation is a major highlight too, rich and layered, giving each track its own personality while still tying back to that larger, cohesive story of a life lived across so many cultures and places. Though it could feel like a experiment, truly it's a genuine reflection of who Tavares is and everything she's absorbed along the way.
