Noah James Mass kicks off his debut album in style with "I Am the One"
Choosing to open your self-titled debut with a song this alive made it clear right away why Noah James Mass should be receiving the praise we’re about to give him. The song is called "I Am the One", and immediately, it took us by storm! This is a driving slice of alternative rock that wastes no time announcing exactly what kind of artist you're dealing with, and it makes for a genuinely fun, immersive listen from start to finish.
Mass built this track completely on his own terms, handling the writing and production himself before bringing in Rick Carson for the mix and master. That hands on approach really comes through in how cohesive everything feels. Electric piano, raw guitar, and exceptional drum work all come together here with real intention. The song has a rich layered feel while still keeping that essential rock backbone front and center. There's 100% a bluesy energy running underneath it all too, the kind that immediately calls to mind acts like The Black Keys. Though let us be clear, Mass never feels like he's just chasing that comparison. You get some Auerbach in the vocals, but he’s in a league of his own we feel.
What stood out a ton is how intimate the vocals feel even as the instrumentation swells around them. Mass has a real knack for keeping things personal without sacrificing any of the song's energy, and that balance gives "I Am the One" a lot of its charm. This track grooves hard while still feeling like it's letting you in on something real, which is a tricky combination to pull off. Unsurprisingly, he handles it with ease.
Considering Mass built this entire production from the ground up himself, from the initial guitar and piano tracking all the way through the string, organ, and synth work, it's genuinely impressive how full and alive the whole thing sounds. It’s cinematic, powerful, and truly has so much soul infused into every moment.
