Peter Xifaras crafts a lush & genre-defying gem on album, "Adagio Grooves"
On Adagio Grooves, composer and multi-instrumentalist Peter Xifaras delivers an album that feels like a conversation between jazz and classical music while each genre gets its moment to shine. It’s a record that not only affirms Xifaras’ status as one of today’s most versatile composers but also showcases his ability to curate a dream team of musicians who elevate his vision into something wholly transportive.
Over the course of six excellently arranged tracks, Xifaras blends the sweeping textures of The Budapest Symphony with saxophone work of UMG artist, Justin Chart. It’s a fusion that feels both effortless and meticulously crafted, with every note falling exactly where it should, yet maintaining a ton of spontaneity as well.
Xifaras, an artist renowned for his work as a guitarist, producer, and composer, is no stranger to keeping things flowing. Yet, Adagio Grooves feels like a defining moment in his career as it’s really a perfect distillation of his lifelong dedication to bridging musical worlds. The album moves with a confident grace, weaving in elements of slight funk, soul, and even touches of cinematic ambiance.
Paramount to the massive sound is Xifaras’ own keyboard work, which also gets its moment in the sun. His playing is soulful and precise, never flashy, yet always in command and trying new things. Bassist Max Gerl and drummer Scott Jackson create a rhythm pocket that are both warm, organic grooves that ground even the album’s most expansive moments. For us, that would have to come on the almost title track, “Adagio Groove”.
The album meanders through downtempo moments that invite reflection before climaxing into joyous, funk-tinged sections that are impossible not to move to. The arrangements are lush but never overbearing, with The Budapest Symphony adding depth and drama without overshadowing the intimate groove of the quartet.
This is a record built for those who appreciate the sounds of the past and present and who understand that groove and grace aren’t mutually exclusive. Whether it’s a late night drive, chilling on the couch with a cup of coffee, or walking through the city, the options are truly endless to enjoy this work.
