Riot State’s “America, The Ghost (Basement Demo)” arrives like a Molotov Cocktail
Punk has always thrived on bring as much energy as possible to the plate. We’ve always though the best songs in the genre don’t politely knock at the door, they kick it off its hinges. Riot State’s debut release, “America, The Ghost (Basement Demo),” does exactly that! Across a blistering three minutes and 45 seconds, the Denver trio delivers a statement of intent so fierce and fully realized that it feels less like a first single and more like an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a project that’s going to continuously blow you away.
For a band that only formed in late 2025, Riot State already sound like a group operating with the confidence of veterans. That’s hardly surprising though because they’re built from a collective of seasoned Colorado musicians with storied histories. Yet this song never feels like musicians resting on résumés. Instead, it captures the thrill of artists starting fresh, united by a common purpose and fueled by something urgent to say.
The influence of politically charged heavyweights like Rage Against the Machine is unmistakable, but Riot State avoid imitation by channeling that spirit through their own lens. It’s a track that feels simultaneously familiar and immediate, rooted in punk’s confrontational tradition while introducing subtle elements that give it a distinct identity. Most notably, there are flashes of hip hop cadence woven into the vocal delivery. Whether it was purposeful or not, it added soo much to the song as a whole.
Mitchel Paulson’s vocals sit at the center of the storm. His performance carries the fire and conviction necessary for music like this to land with an impact. There’s an energy in his delivery that feels like it’s being controlled by fury and outright catharsis.
Instrumentally, Riot State sound enormous. Trios have always occupied a special place in rock history, but making three musicians feel like an army requires chemistry. Ariadnee Ziady’s lead guitar work crackles with intensity, delivering riffs that feel built for packed venues and raised fists. Meanwhile, Troy Ten Eyck’s bass anchors the chaos and gives plenty of groove for you to bop along.
As debut singles go, “America, The Ghost (Basement Demo)” accomplishes exactly what it should, it makes you need more. It introduces Riot State’s sound, establishes their mission, and hints at enormous potential waiting just beyond the horizon. With an appearance at Denver’s legendary Underground Music Showcase looming, industry attention is already beginning to turn toward the band. To be honest, we’re not surprised.
The ground floor doesn’t stay open for long. Riot State sound like a band with momentum and the rare ability to turn raw conviction into unforgettable music.
