Super Love keep it loose & joyful on latest album, “Sounds of Seance”
We think it’s a major compliment when you listen to a record and actually feel like you’re standing in the room with the band. “Sounds of Seance” from Super Love is exactly that kind of listen! It’s warm, organic, and completely unfussy, the sort of record that invites you to relax, turn it up, and sing along for the ride.
For those out of the know, Super Love is an alt-rock band on 88th Street Records, formed in New York City in 2019 by Constance Watkins on lead vocals and Jared Watkins on “every instrument he can get his hands on”. They call their approach “autonomous indie,” and it fits. Rock, pop, hip-hop, punk, and jazz all drift through their sound, but nothing ever feels forced or like a challenging genre exercise. Each track lands somewhere unique yet familiar, which is a tough balance to strike and one they’ve consistently made look easy over the years of us listening.
The record is quite vocal forward and that’s a smart choice. Constance’s voice sits front and center, giving the songs a personal, welcoming quality that makes them easy to connect with. But the instrumentation is doing plenty behind her. There’s a lot of life happening in the background, with layers and textures that reward you if you tune in. Jared produced the record himself and his hands-on touch gives it that live-in-the-room feel, like you’re hearing a band play together rather than a stack of polished parts.
There are lots of alt-rock moments here, but plenty of pop too, and the blend is really cool from start to finish. Neither side takes over. The rock gives the songs some grit and energy, while the pop keeps everything bright and catchy. The result is carefree listening in the best way. You don’t have to work to enjoy it and we can essentially guarantee you’ll find yourself humming along by the second spin!
We also had the chance to sit down with Constance and Jared for an interview (linked above!), and it was a great conversation as always. Talking with the husband and wife duo gave us real insight into how this record came to be. We talked about the making of the album, the production, and their writing process. A big theme was their decision not to second-guess themselves along the way, and you can hear that freedom in the finished product.
That easy confidence is what makes “Sounds of Seance” so so enjoyable. Super Love have made a record that trusts its instincts, blends genres without overthinking it, and puts feeling and fun first. It’s a cool, cohesive, deeply likable listen from a band that clearly isn’t interested in staying in one lane. With all that being said, we urge everyone out there to give it a spin!
